Bolt Action: ZiS-30 Tank Destroyer
A desperate improvisation born of the catastrophic early months of Operation Barbarossa, the ZiS-30 was the Soviet Union’s first purpose-built tank destroyer — a powerful 57mm ZiS-2 anti-tank gun mounted on the chassis of a Komsomolets artillery tractor. Rushed to the Western and Southern Fronts in September 1941, the ZiS-30 proved a capable and effective weapon against Hitler’s panzers despite its ungainly appearance and limited traverse.
Capable of firing up to 25 rounds per minute in theory, the ZiS-30 retained the tractor’s original ball-mounted hull machine gun for engaging enemy infantry — making it a versatile if fragile addition to any early-war Soviet force.
