The Royal Hungarian Army's Honvéd infantry divisions were the backbone of Hungary's contribution to the Axis war effort on the Eastern Front. Though not as well trained in infantry tactics as their German counterparts, nor as heavily equipped, the Honvéd fought with determination through some of the most gruelling campaigns of the war.
Although the majority of infantry forces fielded in 1944–45 were not combat-hardened, there were experienced units forged by three years of fighting on the Eastern Front. Infantry divisions of the Hungarian First Army had recently fought in the defence of Galicia in early 1944, and would put that hard-won experience to good use — notably the 25th Division at the Battle of Tordá and the 10th Division inside the Budapest pocket.
A Hungarian rifle platoon went into battle with 3 sections of 13 men, giving the Magyars a meaningful advantage in manpower over their German counterparts. The issuing of modern Panzerfausts gave them a fighting chance against Soviet armour that their countrymen on the Don River in 1942 had been denied.
