Bolt Action: LVT-4 Buffalo Amtrac

The Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT) was one of the most important amphibious vehicles of the Second World War, introduced by the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Army to bridge the gap between ship and shore. The LVT-4 Buffalo was by far the most numerous variant, with over 8,000 vehicles produced — and quickly pressed into service not just as a supply ferry, but as an assault and fire support vehicle in its own right.

The LVT-4’s distinctive rear ramp door allowed troops, supplies, and light vehicles to disembark under cover, giving passengers a far greater chance of surviving initial contact with the enemy compared to craft with frontal ramps. Troops affectionately nicknamed them ‘amtrac’, ‘amtrak’, or ‘amphtrack’ — shorthand for amphibious tractor.

On the tabletop, the LVT-4 opens up a wealth of scenario possibilities — from USMC assaults on Japanese-held Pacific islands, to Commandos crossing the Scheldt Estuary, to Allied forces crossing the Rhine during Operation Plunder.
