The T-26 was the backbone of Soviet armoured forces throughout the 1930s and into the early years of the Second World War. Derived from the British Vickers 6-ton tank, it was produced in enormous numbers — over 11,000 units across numerous variants — and saw combat in the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War against Finland, and the desperate early battles of Operation Barbarossa. By 1941 it was outclassed by German armour, but it remained in service on secondary fronts and in the Far East throughout the war.
