Introduced in the Western Desert in 1940, the Valentine II was one of the most widely produced British tanks of WWII, serving with British and Commonwealth forces across North Africa, the Soviet Union (via Lend-Lease), and beyond. Designed as an infantry support tank, it was used to accompany and protect advancing foot soldiers, trading speed for protection and reliability.
The three-man crew found the Valentine cramped and slow, but praised its exceptional reliability in the harsh desert conditions. At 65mm of frontal armour, the Valentine could shrug off most hits from contemporary anti-tank weapons, and could hit back with its 40mm QF 2-pounder gun and co-axial Besa machine gun — a capable combination against enemy armour and infantry alike.
